Patient Madrid Lays Thins Espanyol Out

Real Madrid vs. Espanyol
September 21, 2010
Santiago Bernabeu
3-0

In front of an awfully quiet and often silent Bernabeu crowd on a working Tuesday night, Mourinho and company worked patiently to carve Espanyol out for the win. Even though the 3-0 victory looks very convincing, the victory was not settled until Gonzalo Higuain grabbed Madrid's second late in the second half and Karim Benzema replacing Higuain smashed home a trademark static Benzema goal. Both of these strikes came against the run of play as Ronaldo worked quick on the counter attack to feed Higuain for the left-footed shot. This was by far Ronaldo's best pass of the night as he continues a sub-par beginning to the season as the Madrid faithful are now rarely treated to a successful array of tricks and flicks. Ozil played well yet looked shackled without the first ball coming from his international teammate Sami Khedira who was missing the first half because of injury. However, Carvalho and Alonso by far had the best games as they moved the ball quickly and at times through the air to create numerous opportunities even from the defensive third. Pepe recieved a double yellow card and red card ejection that was followed by Espanyol's own red card plus another late red card in injury time in a testy encounter. Next up, Levante! Hala Madrid!
